From the article "Don't call it School:"

"...from a former student’s comment. When I asked Vlad how he would describe the center, he took a few moments, then answered: “It’s a place to begin remembering how to learn again.”"

I went to an alternative school for my senior year at Walden III in Racine, Wisconsin. It was 1972 and the first year it opened. I was a little lost at first without the structure I had been used to, but quickly found my interests. I spent most of my time attending class with the Mythology teacher, reading at the Public Library or sitting at the lake sketching. When I think back to that time at Walden, I think in exactly the same terms as the former student from North Star. I credit Walden with saving my curious soul from petrification. It saddens and irritates me to see the same thing happening with many of the students at the public school I now teach in.
