Hi,

Cedarwood Sudbury School (Santa Clara, CA) is seeking candidates for the
position of staff member for the 2002-2003 school year. Cedarwood is a
nontraditional school for students aged 5-18. Students control their own time
and activities and vote in the democratic bodies that govern the school. The
school was founded in 1995 and currently has approximately 25 students.
Further information about the school and its educational philosophy can be
found at the school's website, located at www.cedarwoodsudbury.org.

Cedarwood is modeled on Sudbury Valley School, and prospective staff
candidates should familiarize themselves as much as possible with the
literature about Sudbury Valley. Reading the book Free at Last, by Daniel
Greenberg, would be a good start; it is available from Amazon.com or Sudbury
Valley School (telephone (508) 877-3030 or on the web at www.sudval.org).

Staff members at Sudbury schools have duties that are far different from
those of teachers in traditional schools. Staff members spend most of their
time talking, participating in meetings, helping kids in a variety of ways,
and fulfilling administrative responsibilities. Sometimes a staff member will
have specific skills or knowledge that students are interested in learning,
so there is some formal instruction, but this is not how staff members spend
most of their time.

Every spring, students and staff members vote to elect staff for the coming
year. There is no tenure. The staff election process for the 2002-2003 school
year will be held in April and May. Prior to the votes, anyone who wishes to
run should visit the school enough for students and staff to get to know
them.

The budget for 2001-2002 pays beginning staff members $15 an hour, with no
benefits except for five paid personal or sick days for full-time employees.
There is a 10% pay increase for each year's full-time experience at a Sudbury
school, and a 15% increase for full-time employees. The school will not
finalize its budget for the 2002-2003 year until late May or early June.

Typically new staff members are elected to work part-time, working one to
three days per week. It is usually only after people are sure about a new
person's usefulness and commitment that the school elects him or her to a
full-time position.

Cedarwood is located in Santa Clara, CA, next to San Jose and an hour south
of San Francisco. The weather is great, and the area is culturally and
ethnically diverse. Largely because "Silicon Valley" is located here, real
estate prices (both for buying and renting) are very high. Therefore a new
part-time staff member might have to show determination and ingenuity in
order to stay afloat financially (e.g. finding roommates, part-time jobs, or
whatever).

This is a great place for people who want to be part of a community that
genuinely empowers kids; who have the desire, abilities, and personality to
be useful to the school; and who can afford to work here. Please contact us
at Freekids@aol.com if you have more questions, or call at (408) 296-2072.

Take care,

Stuart Williams-Ley
