Two points: first, if the students ask for it, should we deny them a
diploma, whatever their motivation in making the request? Secondly, believe
it or not, some students tell us they want a diploma for reasons other than
its future usefulness. The diploma process represents for them a meaningful
rite of passage which they do not want to miss. I'm not ignoring the
extrinsic motivations Ardeshir points to, but I believe these other issues
should not be overlooked.
