Laura,

I am sure you will get a lot better answers than this, but the fact is
Sudbury Valley IS a free school, at least as far as educational pursuits are
concerned. Free schools have sort of a bad rep as places where people behave
poorly; and they often are seen to be sloppily run. So, if people ask that,
you should probably emphasize the democratically-run society as the thing
that makes it NOT like most free schools. That is, the fact that there is an
ordered society in which each student has total intellectual freedom, and as
much physical freedom as fits in a society in which laws are obeyed and
rights are protected.
