The answer to your question is, "Yes." Lots of "unschooled" kids go on to
become employed and/or go on to college. Some choose other paths.
I take exception, however, to your assertion that reading, writing, etc.,
are "fundamentally boring". They are gateways to all kinds of exciting
things and kids see that. In addition, they are enjoyable activities in and
of themselves.
Without over-analyzing the situation, is it possible that your son "caught"
your belief that reading, writing, etc. are boring and therefore decided to
have little to do with them?
