Each county in Maryland has a different union scale. Currently, teachers in
Howard, Montgomery, and Prince Georges Counties (the "biggies") start at over
$27,000. It is historically true, however, that private school teachers earn
less than their counterparts in public schools, whether the private school is
a democratic school or a military school or a religious school or a preppy
school or whatever! For example, in 1978 I went from Ann Arbor, MI, earning
about $11,000 to The School in Rose Valley (a progressive elementary school
started in the late 1920s), earning $7,000. I did it in order to be able to
teach in a way that was consistent with my beliefs, not (obviously) to earn
"union scale".
