I am a parent of a 7 year old girl who attends Sudbury Valley, and a
committed feminist. I am fascinated to see that she plays overwhelmingly
with girls. It appears that for the younger kids, gender self-segregation
is common. Mimsy, Hannah et al, please disagree if you do! This is my
daughter's fourth year (I can hardly believe it) and I almost never hear
about boys from her.

What I find so interesting is that this is a decision of the children
themselves, in an environment in which they get to make their own choices.
Does it mean that male and female people are _really_ different, or is it
just a commentary on gender relations in the larger society? Is it good or
bad? I don't know. What I do know is that there is no other school I have
seen or can imagine which I think would be better for Kate.
