I don't agree with this statement, put as baldly as you have, Joe. It is my
responsibility as a staff member to encourage what feels right to me to
encourage as a responsible member of the micro-community. This looks and is
very different than coercion, but if I truly have strong relationships with
the students (as well as with the staff and parents), then one of the things
I am doing a lot of is encouraging what I see as being appropriate to
encourage!

I fear that we run the risk of looking like mindless do nothings when we
posit our role in such terms.
