Disney School

There is an article in today's Wall Street Journal(6-3-97) on page B1&B4
titled "Disney's Model School: No Cause to Celebrate." The school is
public/private and "extremely Progressive." A few of the parents and
teachers were very unhappy with the school but the number of students
are supposed to increase from 218 this year to 900 next year. The
school is called "Celebration School" and even though students were
involved in decision making they did very well in standardized testing.

Sounds like someone has been reading the Sudbury Valley literature but
not everyone was convinced of its wisdom. But if the school does
prosper during the next few years I bet there will be a lot more
coverage in the media. Big bucks are involved for Disney will enjoy the
publicity for their experimental planned community on the grounds of
Walt Disney World near Orlando Florida. Dale
