with all this talk of legality, i think i just should point out that there
have been free schools, notably elizabeth cleaners, that have been built
around a notion of illegality-- a challenge to the existing system. it was
illegal for the students to not be in the official school system but still
the students dropped out and the parents stood by them. in fact the notion
of dropping out became central to their philosophy. likewise it was
impossible for them to legally acquire a building, and so they opened a
squat. if we refrain from an activity there should be a better reason than
just *its against the law*. if we want real alternative spaces then we need
to attempt real self determination regardless of the law. i am not judging
the decisions others have made. that is their choice but it doesnt have to
be that way.
