I agree with the recent comment that It is the work of adolescents to
separate from family, to individuate, and to go their own way in the world.
I have a 13 year old son and have always given him the opportunity to make a
lot of choices (increasing as he grew) and learn by natural consequences. I
stressed the important things like honesty, responsibility, mutual respect.
The thing about dealing with children this way is they become
self-sufficient and you then have to accept their choices and the lessons
they choose to learn (which you may not always like). The thing about
honesty is you don't always hear what you like, and honestly, I think that's
a good thing.
